A conversation with Cary Ruplinger
We sat down with the Senior Director of Sales for our Wholesale Team, Cary Ruplinger, to hear an inspiring story detailing how he found coverage for a client who was denied by six different carriers.
His client needed financial support to keep her ranch and home, and she was looking for insurance solutions to help. After being denied a handful of times by carriers, Ruplinger came onto the case and was determined to find the right policy.
“I just thought all along that it was a situation where an underwriter or a carrier needed to think outside the box and look at the totality of the situation,” commented Ruplinger.
After taking a longer look at the case, he realized this client had a back condition that none of the underwriters paid attention to. The woman was in her early 70s and her underwriting showed she was prone to falls, “But there were some extenuating circumstances on this one where she had an undiagnosed, displaced vertebrate in her back. Her back was broken, and I thought, my goodness, why can’t we get coverage?”
This angle would prove to be the key to unlocking the case, and Cary continued advocating to get her coverage approved using the undiagnosed condition. After spending one year and seven months with the client, Ruplinger finally found a carrier willing to give the underwriting a second look — John Hancock.
“I came back to John Hancock and I said, ‘Here’s the information you wanted,’ and I went ahead and ordered a paramedical exam and all the medical requirements and took an application out on her. That was the best thing I ever did because when they got the paramed back, they said, ‘Oh my goodness, she’s actually in way better shape than we thought.”
Ruplinger secured a $5 million policy on this client, securing her coverage, future and home. It is this kind of peace of mind that our agents can give to their clients and their families.
“I knew in my heart that I could get the right coverage. I just needed to be able to communicate that and be patient. A year and a half later, I think everything worked out,” finished Ruplinger.
